uhhHHHHHHHMHHhmm anyway i woke up from a sweet dream yesterday but forgot 90% of it,,,, and here we are
another species concept?!?!? i wanted to start a more humanoid cs so....!! VERY MUCH A WIP! check back later!

ever awoken from a dream unable to remember what you dreamt up? then you’ve probably been visited by a dreameater!

it is believed that the very first dreameater was created alongside the first dream, and subsequently, the dreamworld. the dreamworld exists on a different plane than our tangible one - it is a place where many strange and unexplainable spirits roam. unconsciously, humans enter this plane within their dreams, and sometimes, they see things beyond their time. dreameaters, creatures with the ability to move freely between both planes, are tasked with consuming these dreams. of course, being the fickle creatures they are, they will often feed on regular dreams, too...

types ✨

there are three main types of dreameaters!

✨ nightmare - common
these dreameaters primarily consume our nightmares. due to this, their appearances are darker. nightmares are usually unstable, so more chains on the body are common.

✨ standard - common
these dreameaters primarily consume our regular dreams. they have a lighter appearance! if these dreameaters eat too many sweet dreams, they are prone to addiction, and therefore more susceptible to becoming blind.

✨ hybrid - uncommon
hybrid dreameaters - as the name suggests- can be sated by both types of dreams. their skin is typically a splice of dark and lights.

dreameaters are born into their type - it doesn’t means that they can’t feed on the other type of dream, it just means that their hunger is not sated unless they consume their type-specific dream!

sub-species and mutants ✨

there are new sub-species and mutants that are being discovered every day!

✨ depraved - rare
depraved dreameaters are a mutant type and primarily consume the dreams of fellow dreameaters. they have black sclera, larger minds eyes and are unable to create strong tethers. they are the criminals of dreameater society and are generally disliked. as dreameater dreams are extremely stable, they do not require chains, but often adorn them in order to blend in.

the minds eye
these extra eye/s, located on the forehead and ears, allow dreameaters to see into and travel within dreams. if overused, the eyes will begin to bleed. if overused within a long time period, they will slowly begin to lose their sight. these eyes are generally closed when within the mortal plane.
blind dreameaters cannot visit the dreamworld and feed - at least, not alone. blind dreameaters need a tether (another dreameater) to link them to the dreamworld, and then bring them back to the mortal plane.

chains
these help shackle the dreameater to the dream they are peeping into! all dreameaters must have some sort of chain around the neck. other body regions may also be adorned with chains. if connected to another dreameater when falling into slumber, the dream of the eater will be shared! [no rarity]

earring
a small, magical compartment in which a memory of all consumed dreams are held. these are extremely precious. when opened, one will be able to filter through all consumed dreams. this is the only way a human can consciously relive their dream, and visit the dreamworld. [no rarity]

tail ring
tail rings are given to a dreameater at birth. they are only decorations until bonding with another dreameater- when bonded, dreameaters will exchange tail rings with their significant other. doing so will establish a strong, permanent tether between the two parties - however, only if strong emotions are also involved. [no rarity]

can dreameaters have several tail rings?

yes! some are born with multiple. the tail rings of deceased loved ones are also typically passed on.

markings
dreameaters are not born with all their markings. rather, their markings will develop as they grow! dreameaters with full-body markings are matured, while those with little tend to be younger. not all dreameaters have markings - this has been thought to be a consequence of cross-species breeding [no rarity]

ears

there's nothing too special about a dreameater's ears, though, they do have excellent hearing - over 5 times that of a human. they’re also quite sensitive, so take care!!

tail

dreameater tails appear tangible, but are actually constructed with an ethereal substance from the dreamworld! they are extrememly soft to the touch, and can become smoky/intangible at will
tail ends are quite flexible, and it isn't uncommon to see a variety of shapes.

relationships ✨

✨ tethers
a tether is a spiritual connection between two parties. weak, temporary tethers are established when dreameaters connect one of their chains to someone (mostly used when feeding). strong tethers can be established through the exchange of tail rings - this is basically a marriage proposal! when two parties share a strong tether, they are able to share dreams, emotions and even memories!

how do you break a tether?

weak tethers can be easily broken - simple remove the chain that is tethered to the other party. as of now, there is no known method to break a strong tether, even if the tail ring of the significant other is removed.

what happens if the other half of a strong tether dies?

the tether remains. of course, you won’t be able to share the dreams/emotions of the deceased, but their presence will linger.

but that’s really the only prerequisite! they breed like humans, and don’t tend to have a mating season ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
cross-species breeding is rare, due to the difficulty of establishing a strong tether sans a tail ring. still possible - but the feelings between the two would have to be extrememly sturdy.

diet ✨

dreameaters feed on dreams, but are capable of eating human cuisine! in fact - they are very fond of it. however, it will not sate their hunger. more lucid dreams often taste better - this is why the dreams of dreameaters are considered delicious. however, it is taboo to consume another dreameater’s dream. doing so is likened to a serious crime.
all dreameaters hate tomatos. im sorry i don’t make the rules that’s just how it is

what do dreams taste like?

well, the taste of dreams aren’t really something humans can comprehend! however, it’s been said that nightmares tend to taste spicy/bitter, whilst regular dreams taste sweet/sour. sweet dreams are delicious, but have the effect of nicotine, and have led many dreameaters to blindness.

can dreameaters dream?
.....yes! they can! they dream exactly how we would dream. since their extra eye/s close within sleep, they have no control within the dreamworld, and often are not even conscious they are dreaming. it is taboo for dreameaters to feed on others dreams, so they have much more lucid dreams.

what is the dreamworld?
well... it changes for everyone! if visiting within a dream, the dreamworld will mould itself for the dreamer. inhabitants of the dreamworld inhabit these dreams that the dreamers conjure

how do dreameaters enter dreams?
they have to connect any one of their chains to their target to create a tether. these chains seem to have a calming aura, so it is rare for the target to wake
